A brief description of El Mirador Archaeological Site

El Mirador, hidden deep in Guatemala’s rainforest, is a key archaeological site of the ancient Maya, flourishing during the Preclassic period (1000 BCE to 150 CE). Covering 26 square kilometers, it features massive structures like the La Danta pyramid, which rises over 70 meters and ranks among the largest pyramids in the world.

Despite its remote location, El Mirador was an advanced city. The Maya developed innovative farming methods, enriching the soil with lime and constructing water systems, including reservoirs. Causeways, or sacbeob, linked it to other cities, reflecting its regional importance.

Abandoned around 150 CE, theories point to deforestation for lime production and possible warfare as reasons for its decline. Rediscovered in the 20th century, El Mirador remains challenging to reach, though ongoing excavations continue to reveal its secrets.

El Mirador Helicopter Tour & Archaeological Expedition

Scenic Flight Over the Mayan Jungle to Discover a Hidden Ancient Mayan City

El Mirador helicopter tours are the best sellers in our helicopter adventures in Guatemala. This helicopter trip delivers spectacular aerial sights of Lake Peten Itza, the island of Flores, the El Mirador archaeological site, and the exotic Maya jungle.

Also, travelers will experience a landing in the lost city of El Mirador and a guided trip to the famous Maya site. On arrival, visitors will have time to explore El Mirador’s awe-inspiring magnificence.

This exceptional heli trip will transfer across the fantastic and millenarian Mayan rainforest, looking for the lost city of El Mirador. This natural wonder has been proposed as a UNESCO cultural and natural heritage site based on its exuberant jungle, the great variety of wildlife that inhabits it, and the archeological value of the most significant city of the Mayan world.

Our knowledgeable tour guide will take us on a journey through history, visiting the El Tigre complex, Los Monos Group, and The Jaguar’s Claw Temple, which displays significant decorated masks of over three meters in height by two in width, where the name this pyramid, The Tiger, is taken.

Then, we will visit the central Acropolis, where structure 313 shows five stages of the building and its back; we will find shreds of proof of the canals that the Mayans used to transport water at that time.

Within this building, we can look for a carved panel with the design of twin brothers, Hunahpu and Ixbalanque, mythic creatures from the holy book of the Mayas, the Popol Vuh. To conclude our Helicopter Adventure in El Mirador, we will visit the fantastic pyramid of “La Danta.”
