El Salvador Classic Tour Itinerary
This six-day itinerary is a starting point for your private journey. Martsam can adjust the hotels, daily activities, pace, and route around your interests and travel dates.
Day 1: Arrival in San Salvador
Arrive at El Salvador International Airport and meet your driver for the private transfer to San Salvador.
The drive is approximately 37 km and 40 minutes, depending on traffic and your hotel location.
Check in and keep the remainder of the day open after your flight.
If you arrive early, your guide can suggest a nearby café, a short walk, or a restaurant for your first evening in El Salvador.

Day 2: San Salvador, Panchimalco & Los Planes de Renderos
Begin in San Salvador's historic center with your guide.
Walk through the central plazas and visit landmarks including the Metropolitan Cathedral, Iglesia El Rosario, and the National Palace area.
Continue to the National Museum of Anthropology, where selected galleries introduce El Salvador's pre-Hispanic history and provide useful background for the archaeological sites visited the following day.
After lunch, travel south toward Panchimalco, approximately 14 km from San Salvador.
Walk through the town and visit the historic Santa Cruz de Roma church before continuing to Puerta del Diablo.
Take an easy walk around its rock formations and viewpoints, then continue to Los Planes de Renderos.
Finish the afternoon over pupusas at one of the area's pupusódromos, with your guide helping you explore different fillings and preparations.

Day 3: Joya de Cerén, San Andrés, Santa Ana & Tazumal
Leave San Salvador for the Zapotitán Valley.
Your first visit is Joya de Cerén, El Salvador's UNESCO World Heritage Site. Preserved homes, agricultural areas, kitchens, and other structures offer a close look at daily life in a pre-Hispanic farming community.
Continue approximately 5 km to San Andrés, an important regional center with plazas, monumental structures, and an acropolis.
Travel on to Santa Ana for lunch and a walk through the historic center around Parque Libertad, the Cathedral, and the National Theatre.
From Santa Ana, continue approximately 14 km to Tazumal in Chalchuapa.
Explore the site's monumental Maya architecture before traveling another 30 km to Concepción de Ataco.
Check into your hotel and enjoy the evening in the western highlands.

Day 4: Ataco & Salvadoran Coffee Country
Begin the morning on foot in Concepción de Ataco, with time for its central streets, murals, cafés, shops, and small workshops.
Continue to a working coffee estate in the surrounding highlands.
Learn how coffee is cultivated and processed, following the stages that are active during your travel season. Finish with a guided tasting before lunch.
Return to Ataco during the afternoon, with time to enjoy your hotel or explore the town independently.
Optional Evening in Nahuizalco
Travelers interested in Salvadoran food traditions can continue approximately 26 km to Nahuizalco in the late afternoon.
Walk through the center before visiting its night market, where family-run food stalls prepare a wide range of local dishes, drinks, and sweets.
Your guide can help you choose several specialties to taste, turning the evening into an informal Salvadoran dinner before returning to Ataco.
Overnight: Concepción de Ataco
Day 5: Cerro Verde & Lake Coatepeque
Leave Ataco after breakfast and travel approximately 44 km to Cerro Verde.
Walk one of the park's shorter trails through the forested volcanic landscape, with views toward Izalco and Santa Ana volcanoes when weather conditions are clear.
Continue down toward Lake Coatepeque for lunch beside the water.
In the afternoon, take a private boat ride across this volcanic crater lake, with time to enjoy the surrounding landscape before returning to San Salvador.
The drive from Lake Coatepeque to the capital is approximately 58 km and about one hour, before allowing for city traffic.
Arrive in San Salvador for your final evening.

Day 6: Departure
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel according to your flight schedule.
Your driver will meet you for the private transfer to El Salvador International Airport, approximately 38 km from San Salvador.
